I spent last weekend with a group of young people competing to be part of the GB World Team for their class of boat. Eighteen races over three weekends. It’s a gruelling challenge.

One of the things their coach talked to them about in preparation was the importance of debriefing after every race, he calls it the box.

He encouraged them to ask three questions at the end of each race;

1. What went well?
2. What didn’t work?
3. What do we need to change?

Once they have asked and answered the questions they put the race in a box, let it go and start again. Those young people are learning a skill that can set them up for a life of reflecting and processing well.

Imposter Syndrome is something many of my clients bring to our coaching conversations, the box is really helpful in dealing with that.

Honest reflection of both our successes and failures can help us to grow in our understanding of our skillset, but also reduce our fear of failing. When we choose to reflect on lessons learnt from our failures we start to build our resilience and begin to challenge the inner voice that we are an imposter.

What does self reflection look like for you?
