I was talking to one of my clients this week about the frustration of being stuck, it’s a common feeling.
Moments of change, moments you’re in a transition space and you cant quite move into what’s next.
I talked with my client about a three step process,
1. Behaviour
2. Feeling
3. Need.
When we are in that place of feeling stuck we often try to manage another area of our life, to take control in some way. In our work life this can look like starting to try to micro manage your workload or your staff. In this context that would be the behaviour, but that behaviour is arising out of a feeling.
The temptation is to then manage the behaviour, but in order to actually move well through change we need to go deeper.
Behind the behaviour is a feeling. That feeling could be many things, but for example in transition you could be feeling insecure, once we get to the feeling we can begin to work out what the need actually is.
Personally I have often found the need for me in those moments is fear. So when we deal with the need, and understand what’s the thing behind the thing, we can deal with it and make peace with where we have been in order to move forward.
So instead of just managing behaviour, go deeper and create sustainable change. If you’re feeling stuck, or would like to look deeper at the need, please get in touch.
